Eco-Safe Driving and Riding
An 'eco-safe' driver or rider will contribute to road safety as well as reducing
fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. By making changes to driving style or
riding style you will save money.
Green Driving as Part of the
Practical Driving Test
As part of your driving test, you will be assessed on your ability to drive or
ride in a way that shows eco-safe driving techniques.
This test is not part of the existing assessment criteria for the practical driving test. You will not fail your driving test if you do not demonstrate economical driving techniques.
At the end of the practical test the driving examiner will assess how efficiently you are driving. By observing your control and planning feedback will be given as guidance on how eco-safe you are.
Control for the Eco DriverAlways use the vehicle controls as smoothly as possible, with particular attention to:
- Starting the car and moving away
- Accelerating
- Use of gears
- Driving at an appropriate speed
This reduces wear and tear on your car and will help in reducing maintenance costs and also reduce CO2 emissions.
Planning your Green Drive
You can reduce harmful emissions by anticipating road traffic conditions and
acting in good time rather than reacting to road conditions at the last moment.
- Hazards and apply forward planning
- Use of engine braking
- Turning the engine off when appropriate
